......children need an outlet for the publication
of personal writing that will build confidence and a personal
sense of pride....Hopefully they will become writers for
life!
......children communicate best in their native language....Too bad I only speak Spanish and English.
......children need exposure to other languages and
cultures to become good world citizens....Maybe
their parents and peers will cultivate a little cross-cultural
respect too.
......children will acquire computer technology skills
if internet activities hold high or personal interest for them.
......web pages targeted at child audiences should
contain no advertising boxes or commercial sponsorship plugs....I can barely justify the PBS t.v. show links to
myself...
Enjoy!....
UPDATE 1/6/2000: I recently had to ask that a link to Kidscribe be removed from a popular search engine and web index. When surfers arrived at Kidscribe from that site, a frame promoting the other site's index was left across the top of the Kidscribe page. That is standard practice on all pages linked from their site, so I asked that the Kidscribe link be removed. They protested that they tried to make the web a safe place for children. But again, I firmly believe that web pages for children should not contain advertising. And although sometimes frames state "advertising" or "frame off", that won't prevent a child who might be learning to read or one who can't yet distinguish propaganda from factual information from accessing unwanted pages. I also didn't want to give the impression that I endorse the other site, since it was not really a kids' link. So parents, teachers - help your kids be careful out there!
UPDATE 8/2000: Well, I've decided to name names. Kidscribe appeared in the search engine About.com for a second time, even after I'd asked that it be removed back in January. This time it was in a different category, organized by a different "host", who are apparently independent of one another. Yet again, a frame promoting their index was left across the top of the Kidscribe page when linked to. Needless to say after my experiences, I am not a fan of About.com, and I don't recommend it. And I'll keep checking their index to make sure that Kidscribe's not listed, so that kids will continue to be safe on the internet.
